Understanding the Benefits of Estate Planning
Hi there, I’m the Okmulgee attorney Jay Bills, and I’m here to talk to you about estate planning. Estate planning can be very beneficial for a lot of different people. It’s not always for the uber-wealthy. Estate planning can be putting things in place to avoid probate.
That way you’re not leaving your loved ones with a big expensive probate hearing that could cost thousands of dollars and take anywhere from 18 months to 24 months for something that could easily be done ahead of time. Whether it’s not putting that property in the trust or setting up property to be in joint tenants with a minor child or a brother or sister if you wanted to.
Avoiding Probate Complications
But even just setting up things to be in trust with your checking accounts, your stocks, and things of that nature, allows your loved ones to be able to manage their inheritance or the trust to avoid a long and lengthy probate court. And if you die without a will, it could end up going to someone that you hadn’t intended to.
If you have a child who’s estranged from you, but you have a good relationship with their grandchild, there are things that we can put in place so that your wishes are followed through by the court. There are also things called a pour-over will. A pour-over will handle any assets that you acquire after the date of the trust.
Simplifying Life for Your Loved Ones
So things like that can simplify life for your loved ones after you’re no longer here. So if you have any questions about estate planning, please reach out to Jay Bills, the Okmulgee attorney. Thank you very much.
