Understanding the Arraignment Process
Hi there. This is Jay Bills, the Okmulgee Attorney with the Wirth Law Office, and I’m here today to talk to you about the criminal proceedings, specifically the very first appearance at court. It’s called the arraignment. That’s when you show up for court and they’re going to give you a list of what your charges are. They’re going to ask you if you received a copy of the information. That’s going to be all the identification markers in the information, your name, your social security number, your address. They would certainly want to make sure that they got the right person.
You’re also going to rise to the right to be able to get an attorney, whether or not you can afford a private counsel or if you’re going to be court-appointed. There’s an application for a court-appointed attorney that you’re going to if you may or may not be eligible for. But you’re going to certainly want to have an attorney who’s going to reach out for you and be able to fight for you and show the district attorney any other information that might help get you a better deal. Or if you’re not guilty, they’ll work towards preparing for trial.
Importance of Having Legal Representation
Having legal representation during the arraignment process is crucial in ensuring that your rights are protected and that you have the best possible outcome for your case. An experienced attorney can review the charges against you, advise you on the best course of action, and represent you in court. They can also negotiate with the prosecution on your behalf to potentially reduce charges or penalties. It’s important to have someone on your side who can navigate the legal system and advocate for your interests.
